The amateur connoisseur

Jeroen

For 13 years dutch-born Jeroen lived in the the land of “the long white cloud” and the land of the Sauvignon blanc: New Zealand. Whenever possible he visited vineyards in regions such as the Hawke’s Bay, the Wairarapa and Marlborough. He enjoyed the tastings and the degustation menus with the recommended wine match at the Vineyards. Although he can be considered as a fairly active person that likes to ski and hike in the mountains or go paragliding, he equally loves to have a BBQ with friends and an easy to drink wine. Less than two years ago, Jeroen moved to Switzerland.

“Having arrived recently in Switzerland and barely speaking the local language (working on it!!) I have to learn not only a new language but I also needed to discover new wines I may like. Visiting the Lavaux vineyards so far has been great, trying the wines combined with the scenery is something very special. Trying to read the labels has however proven pretty pointless to me so it is all about my own taste combined with “the occasion” when drinking wine.”

Even though he says of himself to be by no means a wine connoisseur, Jeroen gained lots of experiences in wine tasting and is always up for trying out grape varieties he doesn’t know yet and his journey is continuing.

“The wide variety of wines available from so many different countries and regions within countries is what I find fascinating about wine. As well, the way the grapes are grown on the mountain sides or seeing rows and rows of vines is something special.”

Despite his preferences, he usually makes the choice based on the food he’s about to eat, the activity he did prior or simply the weather: red when it’s cold, hot wine (Glühwein) when it’s really cold and white when it’s warm.

“I typically choose the wine I am going to drink depending on the above and do consider the price of the wine. Being Dutch I do like a good deal.”

I definitely want to try this wine again!

I tasted this wine on one of the first nice warm evenings following a day of paragliding in the beautiful Alps. First reaction “WoW” that is nice!! Second reaction: This is a great wine!
I don’t typically drink rosé but as I am keen to try new wines and based on some earlier reading of reviews could be a winner. It definitely is!
Perhaps it is because although it is a rosé it was a very light colour rosé definitely on the white side of the colour spectrum but it still has a subtle red hint to it.

Interesting wine on a hot summers day

I tasted this wine on a very hot evening. I liked the looks of the bottle itself to start with which is always a plus. The taste of this wine is fresh at the start which is nice on a warm evening but it is a little acidic towards the end but not over the top. It’s is an interesting wine for sure. It does for some reason taste like there is more alcohol in it then usual wines, although perhaps that is because it is hot outside….
Doing some simple googling on this wine and see what other people think is also pretty interesting you will find references to some pretty famous people connected to this vineyard which could be right or wrong who knows but it is a bit of fun.
Back to the wine, we had this wine with a proper Risotto with bacon, recommended by multiple reviews and wow it did not disappoint, loved it!! Wine and Food combined in the right way, you just can’t beat it!
My Conclusion: It is a nice wine that goes well with risotto with bacon in it, mind blowing perhaps not but an interesting wine for sure on a hot summers day!

A very interesting wine that most red wine lovers would appreciate and those that prefer white or rosé could really like

We tried this beautiful red wine with friends who came over for a more “formal BBQ” (this basically means cooking the meat on the Barbie but eating inside as its too cold to still sit outside) and the Sicilian wine did not disappoint.
Everyone was very impressed it was a nice wine that went really well with the New Zealand Lamb. It was rich in taste but to me did have a bit of a bitter after taste (maybe a little too much). Together with a nice Gravy however, it seemed to be a really good combination.
I want to try this wine again in the winter as I think it would be even nicer after a day on or off the slopes. I would also try it again with a Swiss Cheese Fondue as I think it would be a perfect combination the Swiss Fromage taking caring of the bitterness perhaps.

Pleasant wine that goes well with something with Cheese

I tasted this wine on a nice but cool spring evening. Prior to tasting I did some research online and also read the label on the bottle in preparation. After reading the description on the bottle and the research online I had to get prepared for an explosion of flavours. (The bottle label alone talks about 6 flavours and some perhaps more qualified reviewers mention anything up to 12 different flavours!!)Based on that we decided this wine may go well with an original Swiss Macaroni Cheese, one of the few flavours not mentioned in reviews. Who doesn’t like a bit of cheese with pear and apples, honeysuckle and fig!
As it had been a while I had a Chardonnay, I noticed that when pouring the wine it almost came out a bit thick(ish), maybe this was because the wines I have been drinking lately were Sauvignon Blanc wines, it was a bit darker or yellower in colour.
It smelled nice, a bit like walking past an oak tree that had been cut not so long ago. Tasting it prior to having the first bite of a splendid macaroni cheese, I surprised myself that what I noticed at the pour was perhaps right, its consistency was thicker…… I have to admit I did not get most of the many flavours but it was pleasant nevertheless.
Overall it was soft not really anything sharp during or at the end either, no lingering specific aftertaste in your mouth either. The only taste left behind was…. lets have another go but let’s combine it with cheese! The first bite followed by another swig of the wine was very pleasant and a good compliment to each other I think.
My conclusion: it was a pleasant wine that goes well with something with Cheese in it, on a semi-cool evening, I don’t think this is the bottle to go to if it’s mid-summer unless it is later at night. Ideal for someone who wants to try and find all the different mentioned flavours as well as it probably would a be a lot of fun.
I am glad I tried the wine and overall a positive experience together with a Swiss Macaroni Cheese on a cool spring evening as it warms you a little when you taste it.
